he
city of the horse, gateway to Calvados, welcomes you to
"Deauville, Pleasures for all seasons..." Deauville,
lady of the French coast, its most glamorous seaside resort,
symbolizes elegance, prestige and sophistication.
How
can we describe Deauville ? For a long time, it was said
to be the 21st arrondissement of Paris, a kind of seaside
annex of the capital's smart districts. It is a flattering
comparison, albeit unfair, because Deauville is much more
than this image of luxury - which is a true one for that
matter - with its luxury hotels and stores that cover the
lengh of avenue Montaigne right up to the sea. But the market,
local produce, the little things of life, are all another
side of Deauville, where friendliness is synonymous with
simplicity. Deauville is polo, but also pétanque;
huge limousines, but also bicycles; evening dresses, but
also track suits; the fashion parade at the salon Les Ambassadeurs,
but also the torchlight procession; the casino as well as
the local bars where the races are run before the starting
pistol goes off; international tourists, but also Deauville
residents, with family trees that go back centuries; Hollywood
stars as you and me. It is this sublte cocktail that gives
Deauville its taste of the real life, all year round.
Over
the years, Deauville has made an effort to broaden its offer
with an increased number of cultural events. The American
and Asian film festivals are only one part of this ambitious
policy. Throughout the year, theatre, dance and concert
events are performed successively. One of the major events
is, of course, the Easter Festival, known for its quality
and long history.
