Ever
since Errol Flynn cavorted here with his Hollywood pals in the 1930s
and `40s, travellers have regarded Jamaica as one of the most alluring
of the Caribbean islands.
Jamaica has rugged mountain ranges, with Blue Mountain Peak,
the highest point, soaring 7,402 feet. It has miles of white beaches,
bordered by the blue Caribbean.
It has 120 rivers flowing from the mountains to the coast. And it
has great central plains, fertile agricultural lands, towering cliffs,
magnificent waterfalls, dense tropical forests...and eternal summer.
The
south
coast is known as the best part of Jamaica
for deep sea fishing and boat trips go out from Belmont to the reefs
or to off-shore banks. Snorkelling is also good because the sea
is almost always very calm in the morning.
It
is understandable that Christopher
Columbus was very impressed when, in May of 1494, he was
blown off his course and stumbled across Jamaica. The original inhabitants
of the island, the Arawak Indians, anticipating trouble, were not pleased
with his visit. They'd been there since about the year 650. They
gave the island its name - Xaymaca. And gave us words we
still use, like hammock, hurricane, tobacco, barbecue and canoe.
But their blowdarts were no match for Spanish crossbows. When Christopher
Columbus discovered Jamaica in 1494, he called it "The fairest
island that eyes ever beheld."
